Chill ‘n’ Chat at Hoe Kee Chicken Rice, Jonker Street

Last Friday, I was invited to visit Malacca by YB Wong Nai Chee, the Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka, for a food review and to chat a little about politics. It was a nice breezy trip down (drizzling along the way) to the cultural state of Malaysia. We started our journey from Puchong at 10.30am and arrived at Melaka Raya almost past 12.30pm.

Upon arrival I gave Wong a buzz and the ever friendly politician quickly agreed to meet up at the Mahkota Parade. I told him about my food excursion and he suggested chicken rice ball at Jonker Street.

We headed to Hoe Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant to try out the Hainanese chicken rice. My elder brother was excited at the opportunity. It was his first visit to Malacca and he had wanted to try out the famous chicken rice.

The lunch was marvelous and the host, YB Wong, was warm and friendly. We would like to thank him again for showing us around.

Nyonya Cafe at New World, Penang

My good friend, Neil Khor, recommended I visit a nyonya restaurant at New World. So, I invited another friend, Jessie Loh, an IT entrepreneur to tag along as my special guest for the food review.

The restaurant is hidden by some trees but it looked cosy and well decorated. We were greeted by a friendly outlet manager, Kristine. She sat us down and Kenneth Yip, the owner of the cafe helped us with the menu.

Kenneth helped us to order several dishes and its signature ‘asam/lemak’ laksa as well. Watch the video if you wanted to know how some of these dishes are prepared and about our review.

Kenneth’s parting words, “Penang should promote its unique baba nyonya culture and food”. I nodded with agreement.
